Recently the legislature changed the license reinstatement requirements to include the installation of an IID for drivers that have more than one alcohol offense, conviction or alcohol test refusal on their record. An IID is a handheld breath-testing device that is installed inside the driver's vehicle and is connected to the vehicle's ignition, horn and headlights.[1] If the device registers any alcohol in the driver's system the vehicle will not start. Many models require the driver to blow into the device at regular intervals. Individuals with more than one alcohol offense must have the IID installed prior to the reinstatement of their driving privilege or the issuance of LDP. The IID must be maintained for six months following the reinstatement date and the driver is required to report to a certified vendor each month for maintenance to ensure the device is working properly. The cost for the service varies but a local St. Louis firm charges a $45.00 installation fee (for 2003 vehicles or newer they require a quote), a $69.00 per month service fee which covers the monthly maintenance and a $35.00 removal fee. Failure to maintain the device during the six-month period will result in a re-suspension of driving privileges and the driver will be required to have the IID serviced or reinstalled (the installer will send proof to the Department of Revenue) and pay a $20 reinstatement fee. |
